Wheelchair Sizing Basics

A plain-English guide to the most important wheelchair measurements and how to measure them.

Quick start

Seat width

Measure the widest point of hips or thighs while seated. Add a small clearance for comfort and clothing

Seat depth

Measure hip to the back of the knee, then subtract space so the front edge doesn’t press behind the knees

Overall width

Seat width is not the same as overall width. Wheels and handrims affect doorway and vehicle fit

Core wheelchair measurements explained

What it is

Seat width is the distance across the widest part of the hips (or thighs) while seated

How to measure

Sit upright. Measure the widest point across hips/thighs. Many fitting guides suggest adding a small clearance for comfort and clothing

Why it matters

Too narrow can increase rubbing and pressure. Too wide can reduce postural support and make propulsion harder
